Sports Bet Fields

Short fields of horses are more common in jump than in flat sports bet races. But here we are talking about the number of horses who finish the race without falling or unseating their riders, as well as the obvious number of original starters in a race. Failure to note these important sports betting numbers when handicapping jumpers can result in false impressions of a horse’s ability.

Example: Jack the Jumper
The past performance line for Jack the Jumper’s last race makes him look like an improved sports horse compared to, say, six previous races where he was never closer than tenth. However, a look at the final far-right figure in the past performance line (“3,” indicating number of bet horses that started the race) tells you that Jack the Jumper finished last in a field of three horses. Extrapolating this theory, a case for the debunking of Fence Soarer’s merits could be made by citing the fact that his horse finished next to last.

Betting System

Sports Betting

If you’ve ever been to a football sports bet game and listened to the screaming crowd pushing the already winning team on to add to their score during the last sixty seconds, you know that more than meets the eye is going on behind the scenes and that a whole lot of money is involved.

Systems of Betting

Although sports bet are not legal anywhere in the country except Nevada, it is a multi-million dollar industry, doing big business illegally throughout the year all over the world. If there is a football, baseball, horse racing or basketball game being played, then there is bound to be a lot of money exchanging hands between bettors and bookmakers. In Nevada, the only place where it’s legal, it’s strictly a face-to-face, cash-on-the-barrel transaction. Everywhere else, the rules can be as flexible as the bookmaker wants to make it. Sometimes, simply a phone call will get you into the sports bet action. The advantage, of course, is always set up in favor of the bookmaker. However, if the sports events are carefully analyzed and your money is properly managed, it is possible for you to overcome this advantage and make some money .It is not the intent of the authors of this book to in any way endorse the idea of illegal sports gambling, but rather to simply state in an unbiased manner the known facts about this matter.

Off-Track Betting

There are several places away from the track that you can place your sports bets legally and they are known as off-track betting parlors, or OTB. They are located in New York, Connecticut and Nevada. In Kentucky and Florida they have something similar known as Call-a-Bet. Also, awaiting legalization of OTB are California, Illinois, Maryland and New Jersey.
The advantage of using the OTB method is that you don’t have to go to the track in person. The disadvantage is that you cannot see where the last minute money has been placed and more often than not, that is thought of as the “big” money. Having that information is often very important to the final calculations made by the professional handicapper, who would therefore prefer to go to the track in person.

NEW AND UPDATED INFORMATION ON OFF-TRACK BETTING:

At one time, there was only one way to place a bet or wager through off-track betting parlors, or OTBs. However, during the last year various new forms have come into prominence in the United States. Telephone wagering is now available in Florida, Kentucky and Pennsylvania; out-of-state inter-track (other-track) wagering in California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington and West Virginia; and intrastate inter-track wagering in Colorado and Kentucky. In addition, by press time, phone internet sports bet is expected to be legal all over Canada.
